Frequently Asked Questions

How do I take part in one of your hikes?

  • New-comers are welcome to join us on one of our introductory hikes (over 21's only.)
  • Start by downloading and filling out the Visitor Form. You must complete the form before coming on the walk.
  • Consult our Web Calendar for details of the next introductory hike.
  • If there is no walk in the calendar use the "Contact Us" form to ask.
  • Meet at the pre-arranged 1st meeting point. This is usually the bottle-bank / Supervalu Carpark in Maynooth at 9:00am on the Sunday morning that has an introductory hike scheduled (this can vary so please check the website.)
  • IMPORTANT - Read our Visitors Rules which explains what to wear and bring with you.
  • Enjoy the hike.

Is there any charge for taking part in an introductory hike?

  • There is no charge but if you are getting a lift with someone else on the hike make an offer to contribute towards fuel.

How do I become a member?

  • You must first complete two introductory hikes, one of which must be a mountain walk.
  • Ask the leader for a membership form. They will give you details of where to send the form.
  • The current membership fee is €50 for 1 year.
  • Membership runs from the 1st of November to the 31st of October (in line with Mountaineering Ireland membership.)

Note: New members can join from the 1st of September and enjoy 14 months membership for the price of 12!

  • If you already have Mountaineering Ireland membership with another club ask about “club only membership” which is at a reduced rate.
  • It takes a few weeks to process membership. You will receive a welcome email with the walks programme.
  • New members are eligible to come on “Moderate” walks (as well as intro walks) and it is recommended to undertake a number of moderate walks before moving on to the harder ones. You can discuss this with the walk leader who will best advise you.

Do you do any mountaineering or rock climbing?

  • No. Maynooth Hillwalking Club conducts hillwalking and hikes only.
  • Walks are often on open and exposed mountain and sometimes on steep ground. There may be some scrambling but never requiring ropes.
  • You should check out the Mountaineering Ireland website for details of climbing clubs.

Can I bring my children?

  • No. Maynooth Hillwalking Club only caters for adult walkers (over 21’s.) This is for insurance reasons.

Can I bring dogs?

  • No. As a lot of the walks are conducted in areas were wildlife and sheep are present it is safest not to allow pets.
